I wrote this article on Tips for Brides from a photographers perspective a couple of years ago. It was on an old blog site of mine. I read it through again and made a few changers here and there (good old experience) but here it is again.
I have come up with a few greatย tips that will result in awesome wedding photographs.
- Get to know your photographer.
And visa versa. An engagement shoot is one way of definitely getting to know how your photographer works and also for him to see how best to shoot you. Most of all though it is just about getting to know each other a bit before your wedding day and to be able to relax! Even a cup of coffee and a nice chat goes a long way. Communicate before hand too. Tell your photographer about any ideas you might have. - The Venue
It always helps having a well lit venue preferably with a white ceiling (so the photographer can bounce light from his/her flash if you are indoors), but that is in the ideal world. Your photographer will adapt to wherever they are. I have shot weddings in venues with black draping on the sides and ceiling before though but the photographs will look a bit different in that the backgrounds will not be lit. The same goes for outdoor weddings. - The Bridal Shoot.
Allow for about 1-1.5ย hours between the ceremony and reception. There is nothing worse than having to rush through a shoot because of time, but on the other hand your photographer has a responsibility to get a move on too. I have heard of ridiculous shoots where guests have been kept waiting for 3 hours. The bridal shoot is also a special time for the newly wed couple to be together away from all the guests. It is a happy time and should be a lot of fun too especially if the bridal party are present. Don’t forget a cooler box! - Getting dressed.
Gosh I know it is difficult to be ready a few minutes before time but it does give your photographer an opportunity to be alone with you to get some really great shots before your ceremony. Have your bouquet with you and also your bridesmaids. - Photographers andย Videographers.
Often the photographer and videographer will be competing for the same shot. They are both professionals andย know what to do but if they do not know each other maybe set up a quick meeting or online chat.
And those are some of my thoughts on being a wedding photographer.
Have a fabulous wedding!
